COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is a study of American History from 1898 to the present.

GOALS
Through a variety of methods, students will apply a basic understanding of American History to meet the State Learning Results standards.

CLASSROOM PROCEDURES
   A notebook for note taking is required. It could be part of a three-ringed binder with pockets and white lined paper (or bring a separate folder)

Students must be on time for class and ready to begin.
Readiness includes bringing your text, notebook, writing tools and colored pencils. Plan to be in class and stay in class. You must have a signed pass from guidance or elsewhere if there is a special need which would take you away from class.

Students will listen to each other and work together as learners.

Rude interruptions, obscenities, or racial slurs will not be tolerated.

Be sure to save your returned papers in the event that you should have to prove you did the assignment.

Books are to remain covered all year.

GRADING and ASSIGNMENTS
All assignments must have your name and the date clearly written on the paper.
WHEN ASSIGNMENTS ARE LATE DUE TO ABSENCE, WRITE ≥ABSENT≈ ON THE TOP OF THE PAPER. Assignments will be kept together in the class folder on my desk.

I reserve the right to give spot quizzes after assigned readings.
Be sure to get assignments and notes from classmates when you miss classes.

   Key ideas: Significant political polarization
           Attempt to impeach the President
           Close election of 2000

   Questions: How is a climate of polarization created?
           What are the reasons for the polarization?
           How does political polarization affect the health of a nation?

   Day 1 Activity Red marble/black marble game

           Two students are each given a red and a black marble.
           Students choose one marble and then reveal them at the same time
                   in rocks/scissors fashion.
           Students are not told the purpose, only the scoring method

           If both show red, one point is added to each score.
           If both show black, one point is subtracted from each score.
           If one shows red and one shows black, red loses one, black gains one.

           Without fail, students will initailly show the red marble in the opening rounds, however,    once it becomes clear the risk they are taking, both
            ides usually show the black marble each time regardless of the minus for each round.

       Discussion of the risk and rewards of pragmatism versus partisanship.
       Historical examples.

       Issues to discuss: NAFTA
                   Health care proposal
                   Newt Gingrich and the contract with America
                   Monica Lewinsky scandal
                    Election of 2000

DAY 2
    Understanding the role of the electoral college:
          Activity: Give students state-by state election results from the election of 1992. Working in teams, ask students to change the results of the election, making George H. Bush the winner, by shifting the fewest number of popular votes possible. Refer to cartoon #13 "GHW Bush hiding domestic problems through foreign affairs" on Regent's webpage for important 1992 issue.

Assess the degree of difficulty. How close was the 2000 election by comparison? How many votes would Al Gore need to shift?

DAY 3 Using the election maps of 1992, 1996, 2000, and 2004 as a guide, have teams develop likely lists of states that would be easily won by respective parties in the 2008 general election. Make a four column chart showing which states they carried. Then, have students create a quartile map to show which states the candidates should concentrate on from 1) high piority (purple) to low priority (yellow). Four colors: Purple, red, orange, yellow. Students will be asked to justify their answers in an essay.

The Progressive Movement:
What Was it and What Did it Accomplish?

For the next week, we will be examining the Progressive Movement at its height in American history. You will be asked to research a particular aspect of the movement and one important individual and make a presentation to the group, beginning next Thursday. In your presentation, you will

1) Identify the problem(s) for the group as specifically as possible
2) identify key people who worked to solve the problem (be sure to include the muckrakers)..
3) identify the goals of each group
4) explain the results of this reform effort. What did they do to reform the problems they found?
5) evaluation: How successful do you feel your group was in solving the problems that they faced?

Choose one of the following categories:

1) business monopolies and unfair practices
2) labor conditions (adult as well as child)
3) government corruption and the need for more voter participation
4) urban infrastructure
5) conditions of the farmers

6) environmental problems
7) African-Americans
8) Women‚s suffrage
9) Temperance
10) Education

Please create a Power Point over the issue you have chosen that addresses the five points above. in addition, please write a three page paper about one of the key figures in your movement. Your writing will be evaluated using the school‚s writing rubric and the oral presentation will use the school‚s oral presentation rubric Both are attached.

In addition, you will be expected to provide an outline (it may be from your PPt. presentation) for your classmates to take notes. Please avoid reading your Power Point slides to us. Be sure to create a Works Cited page for sources and to identify where you obtained photographs and any direct/indirect quotations.

Credit for some of the above categories and questions goes to Camden Hills Regional High School and its AP US History course.
